Think about the last few months. How many people got in touch, asked for a price, said it looked great, and then went quiet? Now think about how many of them heard from you again.

For most busy owners the honest answer is not many. Not because they don't care, but because the follow-up is always the job that can wait until tomorrow. Then tomorrow is full too.

Quiet doesn't mean no

People go quiet for ordinary reasons. The timing was wrong. They were waiting on a budget. They got busy themselves. Your email went under forty others. Very few of them sat down and decided not to work with you. They just needed a nudge at the right moment, and it didn't come.

Meanwhile, someone else did follow up. Often it isn't the best business that wins the work. It's the one that stayed in touch.

Put a number on it

Here's a simple way to see what it's costing you. Say your average job is worth £2,000, and five warm enquiries a month go quiet without a second message. If a steady follow-up won back just one of those five each month, that's £2,000 a month, or £24,000 over a year.

Change the numbers to suit your business. Even at a fraction of that, it's usually more than the cost of having someone do the follow-up for you.

The enquiries you've already got are the cheapest sales you'll ever make. You've done the hard part. Someone just needs to finish it.

A simple follow-up routine

  • Keep one list. Every enquiry goes in one place, with the date, what they asked for and where things were left. A spreadsheet is fine.
  • Follow up three times. A few days after the quote, two weeks later, and again after two months. Most people give up after the first.
  • Make each message useful. Answer a question they're likely to have, share a recent job like theirs, or let them know when you've got space. Don't just ask if they've had a chance to look.
  • Write down why people said no. When someone does turn you down, ask why. Over time it tells you what to fix.

When you haven't got the time

If you know all this and it still doesn't happen, that's normal. Running the business comes first. I take the follow-up off your plate: tracking every enquiry, writing messages that sound like you, and keeping conversations going until they become booked calls. Book a call and I'll show you how it would work for your business.
